August 5, 2010: Junior Composers received notification of support on April 29, 2010 from the Arts Learning program of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC). The Workshop: Orchestra Composition is a new program in Minneapolis, Minnesota for sixteen student musicians (age 14-19) offered from September 2010 through June 2011 in ten intensive three-hour sessions every 3-5 weeks on Saturday afternoons from 2-5pm. This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

The Workshop is modeled after the Junior Composers' intensive summer camps. Sessions will include:

  • instruction in music theory and aural skills
  • composition tutorials
  • readings by professional musicians
  • close supervision with student-teacher ratios usually 4:1
  • readings and rehearsals conducted by the students of works they have created for each other
  • online music theory, composition, and technology resources

The culminating event will be a public presentation of new works read by the Minnesota Sinfonia in July 2011. Students can enroll in all ten monthly sessions ($650) or in either of the two five-session terms ($375 per term: September-January or February-June). Scholarships will be available.

The Workshop's artist/teachers are Randall Davidson and Jocelyn Hagen with clinics lead by conductor Bill Eddins and members of the Minnesota Sinfonia. More information on the Workshop: Orchestra Composition will be available soon; if you would like to be notified when a brochure is available, contact Randall Davidson.
