December 6, 2011 (Minneapolis, MN) – Junior Composers has published its Summer 2011 program now available for download from our website. Junior Composers will add a new one-week residential camp for songwriters – Junior Songwriters Institute on July 16-22, 2010. Two other camps will also be offered this July: the two-week Junior Composers Studio (July 11-23, 2011) and one-week Junior Composers Institute (July 17-23, 2011). This is the tenth anniversary season for Junior Composers summer programs.

Junior Songwriters Institute
The brand-new Junior Songwriters Institute (JSI) will begin on Saturday afternoon, July 16 and continue through Friday afternoon, July 22. Students attending the Songwriters Institute are organized into songwriting bands that will work together and with faculty creating new songs. Each band will spend the week writing lyrics and songs that will be recorded in a demo, showcased at a local coffeehouse or club, and performed during Junior Composers Festival 2011 at the University of Minnesota. Guest songwriter and producer Andy Thompson will lead lyric workshops and pre-production sessions with each band before they go into their demo recording session.

Junior Composers residential summer music camps for students age 14-20 (Songwriters Institute, Composers Institute and the Studio) will be held at the University of Minnesota School of Music in July 2011. Junior Composers Institute (JCI) is a one-week camp (July 17-23, 2011) celebrating its tenth summer in 2011; students spend a week composing, notating, rehearsing and then premiering their new compositions. Junior Composers Studio (JCS) is a two-week camp (July 11-23, 2011); students work with faculty and guest composer Libby Larsen on score study, orchestration, and music notation; each student composes and hears the premiere of at least two new compositions.

Minnesota Sinfonia
To mark the tenth anniversary of Junior Composers program, we are offering a special opportunity that challenges students to re-imagine and re-invent the orchestra for the 21st century. The Minnesota Sinfonia and guest conductor Bill Eddins are partnering with Junior Composers to present three reading sessions at the University of Minnesota School of Music featuring 18-20 new and remarkable compositions. The readings will take place at the University of Minnesota School of Music on Monday, July 11 and Monday and Tuesday, July 18 and 19, 2011 as part of the Junior Composers Festival of public events (Festival details to follow).

Junior Composers programs are funded, in part, by the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
