Seth Custer

Seth Custer (Program Director) is a native of East Grand Forks, Minnesota where he grew up studying the saxophone and piano. He received his BM in saxophone performance from the University of North Dakota, his MM in composition from Central Michigan University (studying with David Gillingham and Jose Luis Maurtua) and his PhD in composition (studying with David Gompper) from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Custer is currently a music professor at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolin, where he teaches theory, aural skills, and assists in the woodwind department. He remains actives as a performer and recent commissions include works for chamber ensemble, orchestra, and saxophon/electronic media.

Seth is responsible for Junior Composers music theory staffing and lesson planning, he recruits faculty and artists in collaboration with Randall Davidson (General Director), leads the faculty in the summer Studio and Institute, and has created the new online music theory assessment tool on the Junior Composers website. You can ask Seth for help figuring out what level of theory you will be taught at the Studio or Institute, on questions about Junior Composer music theory instruction and general questions about what you will experience as a first-year student composer.

Dr. Seth Custer is an active composer, performer, clinician, and adjudicator, and his music is heard across the United States. He is a frequent presenter at a variety of conferences and seminars around the country, was named the Distinguished Composer of 2010 by the Music Teachers National Association, and is the recipient of numerous ASCAP composer awards. An Assistant Professor, he is Head of the Department of Music Theory, Composition, and Technology at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, where he has taught since 2009. In addition, he serves as the Program Director of the Junior Composers Institute, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs.
