By Randall - Posted on 11 January 2011

New chamber works composed by members of the Junior Composers Workshop will be given readings this Saturday, January 15, at 4pm in Ferguson Hall at the University of Minnesota School of Music. The January showcase of new work is the culminating event of the Fall term of the Workshop for ten composers (age 14-20) who have spent the last five months learning to compose for standard orchestra instruments (woodwinds, brass and strings).

Composers participating in the January 2011 showcase:

  • Mimi Brown (Wahpeton ND)
  • Mandy Isaacson (Bloomington MN)
  • Alex Kister (Lino Lakes MN)
  • Emmet Kowler (Minneapolis MN)
  • John Kraemer (Blomkest MN)
  • Zack Lindquist (Chanhassan MN)
  • Ivan Lo (Edina MN)
  • Yue Lor (Blaine MN)
  • Chris Neiner (Burnsville MN)
  • Dylan Parese (Minneapolis MN)

There is still room for a few more students to attend the Spring term of the Workshop which will begin on Saturday, February 19. New Symphonies will be the focus of the Spring term -- composers will begin their process of re-imagining what the 21 Century orchestra will become. There will be five monthly sessions on percussion and invented instruments, electronics, improvisation and adventurous experiments of the past 50 years. Conductor Bill Eddins and percussionist Heather Barringer will join composer faculty members Jocelyn Hagen and Randall Davidson as faculty members. Registration for the Spring term is still open until February 19. Scholarships are available. Contact Randall Davidson for more information.
